#TeacupTuesday Favourites September 2017

SEPTEMBER, a month of absolute contrasts here in New England. It was absurdly hot some days,  though there were signs of Autumn temps sneaking in a few days in the month.

Still, every day was perfect for tea. I have been quietly enjoying Harney & Sons Cinnamon Sunset Black tea with orange and cloves. It is sumptuous and rich and I think a lovely afternoon tea for the Autumn. The notes of cinnamon and clove really awaken the senses. My husband says it smells like Christmas every time I drink it.  I  recommend that it is brewed as instructed, and drunk from a bone china teacup. Have you tried it ?

And so like the weather, my picks for this month are varied. From collections displayed as part of milestone birthday celebration, to an Alice in Wonderland teacup.

Here are my #teacuptuesday favourites for the month of September 2017.

Do you have a favourite ?

Today I didn't manage to post yet as I opened my house and stockroom for a belated birthday party and was too busy giving tours and serving cake… it gives me so much joy to share the treasures I have built up and see others appreciate what I love so much myself. Here's a snap shot of the display 🎉☕️🎂❤️ . . . #teastagram #gentlerattleofchina # rattlethecups #antiqueporcelain #antiquesforsale #teacups #antiquestore #antiqueshop #antique #antiques #englishantiques #englishantique #englishantiquesforsale #englishantiquelover #finebonechina #bonechinateacup #teacupsofinstagram #porcelain #porcelaincup #porcelaincups #teacups #teacuplover #afternoontea #luxurylife

Ahoy Mateys! Happy Teacup Tuesday perhaps washed down with a bottle of rum me hearties 😉 •••••••••••••••••••••••• Goodness where to start!? We had a fun afternoon at the grand opening of the new Hamburg Inn location. If you're ever in Iowa City, I definitely recommend eating there and don't forget a pie shake! 😊 And then we walked, sang, and shouted for our elementary school in the City High parade. I love this town! ••••••••••••••••••••••••• I'll talk more about this next Tuesday but on Saturday when I flew into Chicago from LA I decided to go enjoy afternoon tea before driving home. What a delightful treat! Also after navigating LA freeways and inner city Chicago without any mishaps, I feel like I can do anything haha! •••••••••••••••••••••• I want to give a shout out to my sweetheart of a friend Bonnie. You count yourself lucky if you have a close friend like Bonnie. Only a week out from surgery and still very much recovering, she didn't even hesitate when I asked if I could stay with her for a week. We definitely didn't get to spend as much time together as we would've liked because of work but I think we treasured the time we did have. -I think some of my favourite moments were wearing my heels to the grocery store but bringing flats just in case and her three year old did the same, brought her sparkly shoes and some plain ones just in case. 😂 -All the kids waiting up for me and showing off the night I got there. -Spending time in the kitchen together. -Introducing me at church as her dear friend. -Our wonderful relaxing beach day. Being able to be myself and chat for awhile but also not feel bad for dozing off for a bit in the sun. -The drive home, picking out songs for Bonnie and her husband to guess. Whoever guessed the song title first, won. Such giggles! -Playing Anomia the night before I left with Bonnie, her dad, and her husband Spencer. The howls of laughter and fun just warmed my heart. I love that girl. She's one of my special ones. ❤️ •••••••••••••••••••••• How has your week been? Do anything exciting? Let's chat in the comments! 😘

Teacup collecting has quite the cult following. How did you discover it? Tell us your story.

I had to give up work when my first baby was born, after they became ill. I knew i wanted to work for myself and fit doing so around my family. I started The Afternoon Tea Set originally as a some enterprise where i offered catered tea parties, with menus to choose from, a range of looseleaf teas to choose from and all the vintage china and silverware included. The business started to grow but customers kept asking whether I could sell them vintage china and the pieces I used, so i started selling vintage teacups as well. This side of the business continued to grow, so I gave up offering the tea parties and opened The Afternoon Tea Set on Etsy, where I sell vintage and antique teacups that I search for, along with all other vintage and antique pieces for throwing a tea party or decorating your home.  The rest, as they say, is history!

It all began with collecting for my wedding, which is due to take place in a few weeks! I had seen delicate, mismatched china tea sets and plates become popular for a while, but it wasn’t until I saw my favourite cup, a retro poppy Meakin mug, in my cupboard that the idea of collecting bright retro and kitsch teacups and plates from the 60s and 70s was born. I felt that the carefree and bohemian vibe that these items brought would look amazing at my laid-back wedding.

Once I had built up quite a collection I decided that rather than letting my collection gather dust after the wedding, I would offer my collection up for hire for weddings, tea parties, hen dos – any event where a bit of 60s and 70s china would help liven up proceedings! Since starting to collect, I have realised that many other people also love the retro, more bohemian look and have been looking for alternatives to the more pretty, delicate sets (and I see that you have a fab retro Meakin tea set in your Etsy shop!). The seventies boho era has brought a lot of inspiration over on the wedding blogs, and the sixties continues to have an eternal appeal.

I now have about 10 big boxes of tea cups, plates, tea pots, cake stands and milk jugs, as well as picnic blankets and pineapple ice buckets, which I just couldn’t resist!

I have always loved drinking tea…but I  didn’t  actually start to collect teacups until maybe 1½ years ago.
